Training Your Dog Is Easy When You Know What To Do!

It is important to note that telling your dog “no” does not give him any information. For example, if someone comes into your house, and your dog starts to jump, saying “no” is not enough information. Whereas, saying, “sit” is a better alternative, because it gives him something he can actually do. If you tell a dog what you want him to do with a command, this avoids confusion, and he will learn to listen.

One tip to keep in mind when training your dog, is to use its name properly. This is important because control over your pet is the number one priority in training and discipline. Say it’s name often, but only for direct orders. Never call your dog to you if you plan on inflicting punishment on it.

Not showering your dog with enough positive reinforcement when he does good, will reduce the power you have over him in training. Since dogs love attention, giving them plenty of it, provides him with incentive to listen to you. If all he ever hears from you is what not to do, he is not getting any encouragement, only discouragement, so be sure to reward him with praise often.

Encourage your dog’s cooperation in training by rewarding good behavior. Dogs respond to a calm, confident leader who earns respect. When your dog responds to commands make sure you reward him with play or food, and make sure you reward easy commands as well as harder ones to build his confidence.

Learn to understand what your dog is saying through facial expression. Many people fail to see that a dog says even though his he communicates non-verbally with his face, just as we do. When you are training your dog, take some time to see how he responds to commands, rewards and your behavior. Watching his facial expressions will be useful as training progresses and give you a better understanding of your dog.

If you want to teach your dog tricks, but don’t want to offer too many treats, then use regular dog food. By using a portion of their daily allotment of food, your dog is still receiving a reward for doing good, but is not in danger of getting too many treats.

The best way to potty train a new puppy is to pay attention! Keep your puppy where you can see him always. If you notice him sniffing around or starting to circle, quickly pick him up and take him outside. These are signs that he is ready to go potty.

For dogs that chew inappropriately, try a training aid like a liquid that has a strong, bitter taste. Many pet stores sell holistic products that taste terrible to most dogs. Some people choose to steep pepper flakes in water in a spray bottle instead. Either way you choose to go, a bitter or spicy deterrent on furniture, shoes, or other items that you don’t want your dog chewing or eating can stop this behavior in its tracks.

A huge mistake dog owners make is to allow their dogs free reign of the house. Rather, you should limit the areas they are allowed to go to with doggy gates. This will allow you to reassert yourself as the alpha in the house and they will love you more for it.

When you are training your dog, you should always make sure that you are in charge. Dogs are creatures that thrive on dominance. If they feel they are the dominant one, they will never listen to your commands. However, when you show dominance, they will show respect towards you and follow your commands.

When training a dog that is not housebroken it is important to limit the dogs time to roam around the house. By keeping the dog always by the owner it reduces the time it has to go to the bathroom in the house. The dog will not want to go by the owner and must hold it until let outside.

Do not repeat a command when training your dog or asking for behaviors. If you repeat a command twice before your dog offers up a behavior, and then you praise it, your dog might learn that the command is actually using the repeated words. Instead, say the command once and gently help your dog complete the action if he has not done so. Be consistent and patient with your dog throughout this whole process so that he is better able to recognize the commands you are giving him.

Dogs can be spoiled just like children. While rewards are definitely necessary to keep your dog on the right path, too many rewards can lead your dog to expect them! Your dog should be treated for challenging tasks, or performing tasks he knows under exceptional circumstances. Making him work for his grub encourages him to stay on his toes.
