Cheaper is not Constantly Much better

I work to get a large insurance coverage firm inside the northwest, in an workplace with more than 500 other personnel. Management recently decided to replace our current telephone program because the old program was no longer meeting our requirements. I and my co-workers had been under the impression that they were going to update the program, as in “make an improvement”, and that we would have late model phones with technological advancements galore. Boy, had been we in to get a surprise.

One day a couple of weeks ago, we all came in to find new phones on our desks. These were not the state-of-the-art communication devices we had in mind. As an alternative to the sleek, sophisticated, caller IDing, multi-line handling, LCD displaying wonders of the modern day age all of us dreamed of, there was a basic phone with a keypad on the receiver…not in contrast to what you might have had at residence 15 years ago. Moreover for the new telephone, there was a sheet which explained in graphically painful detail exactly which series of buttons one would need to push in order to make this factor function effectively. We had to now enter a digit to place someone on hold, enter a three digit code to transfer someone (one particular digit, dial tone, two digits) and enter a ridiculously lengthy series of numbers to access our voicemail.

Needless to say, we had been in shock. I knew it would not take lengthy before the roars of complaining would drown out the usual office din. Sure enough, by lunchtime our workplace manager came in to tell everybody that we were just going to “try it out to get a while” and that the firm had saved thousands by selecting this solution. I as well as the other staff had been fairly particular that we had currently lost thousands in decreased productivity that morning alone. Oh, effectively…it’s their company, we just bring inside the income for them.

For the next handful of days, we tried to have used to saying “hold, please, even though I transfer you”, removing the receiver from our faces and trying not to curse as we produced a lame-duck try at pressing keys, listening and pressing a lot more keys. It was a nightmare. We had been getting pretty fed up with it, but just assumed that this was what we would need to deal with. Then, out from the blue, we came in 1 day to locate actual phones with actual attributes at our desks. No more looking at the receiver while we frantically tried to crucial in numbers quickly sufficient not to drop the contact. No much more ten digit voicemail “pins”. No a lot more of obtaining no notion who was calling or where the contact came from. Ahhhh, relief at last.

Later the same day, we heard a rumor circulating about the workplace that the VP of operations had returned from a two week trip to New York. His words, upon seeing one of the phones management had originally bought on his desk were, “get rid of them”. All it took had been those four words from a higher-up to set factors correct. Unbelievable.
