Spanish Media
Based on the weight, Spain under Zapatero can break apart. I wonder if it will actually get that far. What surprises me as a foreigner in Spain is the national pride showed in the Spanish media.This is most visible in Sports. Less throughout the Eurocup but in general, activities is shown on television (mostly) when Spain is required. We arrive at see football fits (when Nadal or Ferrer are playing), Formula one (Alonso), the NBA of the USA (if the Lakers are involved, or more in certain when Gasol is playing), etc, etc, etc. The presented sports news has always a component.This is in line with the visitors point; for instance in soccer, in Spain people watch the Eurocup in general when Spain is playing and much less when different national teams are broadcasted.A newspaper like El Pais has reformed its structure recently and much of the change was to modify this image of a national newspaper, focused on record Spanish news with some global bonuses here and there. Today the international news is significantly more prominent.But not all magazines have followed this effort. Most of the time, when reading unusual reports, I wonder why the account was chosen and often the trigger was a Spanish contribution. Like for example in Mozambique:- A Spanish nun is evaluating the industry of organs in Mozambique (Elmundo). Or, now an account in the newspaper ABC reviews about malaria in Mozambique. In the long run, having see the story it is not really much about the malaria problem in Africa or more distinct in Mozambique, but about a Spanish examiner who is near to having found a vaccine from this condition. Certainly Spain has contributed significantly in the struggle against malaria (one reads), but for the random dangerous person there are too many of such partial stories.And then the issue is “what is Spain” and what about the quest for freedom of its neighborhoods? Because in several of those tales the Spanish contribution is paid down to a particular area. In the case of malaria in Mozambique the involvement came from someone of Barcelona, Catalunya…In other cases the involvement is from someone from Mallorca, from Asturias, Andalucia or the Basque Country. And to date, that’s all Spain (at the very least, perceived by the outside world ).H.J.B.
