Many youth groups of all denominations in the usa regularly travel overseas for mission trips and outreaches. Perhaps you are building orphanages in Uganda, or ministering to street kids in Romania, or constructing housing in Guatemala – each of these trips is really an unique chance of teenagers for everyone others in an environment that takes them from their safe place and forces them to evaluate their life from the global context. Should you like a youth pastor or volunteer are intending this kind of excursion, here are some suggestions to help you produce the event a success:

1. Define your goals. What are you looking to accomplish? Will the focus of your energy be using your team to the natives (outreach and evangelism) or are you primarily concerned with the maturation of your students (spiritual growth)? Obviously, you need your team to grow as they serve others, but you like a leader have to know what your priorities have been in advance to be able to spend your limited resources most effectively.

2. Incorporate the trip to your long-term strategy. Dont look for an easy location where one can easily enter and get out. Look at the multiple options available to you, talk to your students and volunteers, and commit yourselves for an organization that aligns together with your goals and values. This commitment will help you to create a special bond as you partner with the ministry throughout every season. Creating a long-term relationship with this particular organization can make even fundraising an enriching opportunity.

3. Coordinate with a local. Look for a native or missionary in the country you wish to visit and request their help while you create your itinerary. They will know the best places to stay and eat (and avoid!). It should also help you when youre applying for visas towards the country, if thats necessary. Many missionary organizations can place you in contact with someone already established in the country you wish to visit.

4. Plan in advance. Have a minimum of six months to plan, recruit, and raise money for that trip; if you have never done anything like this before, give yourself additional time and ask for help from people with experience. There are numerous details and when youre coping with international matters, lots of bureaucracy. Make certain your students have passports, or guide them through the application a minimum of two months ahead of time.
