Never ever give the contractor a large sum of money up front to begin the project. This is almost a sure sign that the contractor that you hired is up to no good. It is understandable that your contractor will want some money up front to start, but it should not be a majority of the total cost. Work into your contract specific times where you will pay as the work gets completed.
