Is it Possible to Have News Without an Agenda?
Partisanship affects everyone (including journalists). For example: A journalist publishes an article about an elected official. How do you know the article is accurate? How can you be certain that he’s telling the truth? Maybe it’s just one man’s feelings?
This is precisely what frustrates so many people when they visit various news websites and media. It is the lack of transparency and prejudice, as well as the editorializing and adlibbing that is so pervasive in the news media that causes people to become tired and cynical of most news websites.
Millions of people feel that they can no longer rely upon traditional media. There are too many instances of media bias and fallibility. There is a definite need for a new news website in which the audience will be able to read every relevant article and view every relevant video made regarding the person cited in the article in order to ascertain the truth. Why should the audience need to question whether the article was written with a slant? We, the audience, should be able to judge and decide what’s true.
I’d like to see a user-driven website that opens every news item to public scrutiny and ensures that unbiased, apolitical, non-partisan news proliferates throughout cyberspace and allows for the exchange of news interactively through user-generated content.
Drudgereport.com, Wikipedia, Snopes.com and answer sharing sites are all good resources but none provides the features that were described.
It is imperative for the public to have the ability to critique the news and offer evidence and historical footage/videos/links about the news item- almost like a Wikipedia of videos and a public snopes.com. This method of online communication would present a new paradigm in sharing news. Users will also have the opportunity to inject values-based material into the news of the day. For instance, if the news headline was about the Anthony Weiner scandal, users would post links about addiction, personality disorder, public lying, relationship advice and guidance, etc.
It is of vital importance to get as many people as possible to interact with and have a grasp on the news so that news is current, fresh and authentic, and reflective of what people really believe.
