Let me introduce myself. My name is Valentine. I lived in Rome for the duration of the third century. That was lengthy, extended ago! At that time, Rome was ruled by an emperor named Claudius. I didn’t like Emperor Claudius, and I wasn’t the only 1! A lot of individuals shared my feelings.

Claudius wanted to have a huge army. He anticipated males to volunteer to join. Numerous men just did not want to fight in wars. They did not want to leave their wives and families. As you may well have guessed, not a lot of men signed up. This produced Claudius furious. So what occurred? He had a crazy idea. He believed that if guys were not married, they would not thoughts joining the army. So Claudius decided not to allow any more marriages. Young people thought his new law was cruel. I believed it was preposterous! I undoubtedly wasn’t going to help that law!

Did I mention that I was a priest? 1 of my favourite activities was to marry couples. Even right after Emperor Claudius passed his law, I kept on performing marriage ceremonies — secretly, of course. It was actually very exciting. Imagine a modest candlelit space with only the bride and groom and myself. We would whisper the words of the ceremony, listening all the although for the measures of soldiers.

One evening, we did hear footsteps. It was scary! Thank goodness the couple I was marrying escaped in time. I was caught. (Not very as light on my feet as I utilized to be, I guess.) I was thrown in jail and told that my punishment was death.

I tried to keep cheerful. And do you know what? Amazing things happened. Several young people came to the jail to pay a visit to me. They threw flowers and notes up to my window. They wanted me to know that they, also, believed in love.

A single of these young folks was the daughter of the prison guard. Her father allowed her to check out me in the cell. Sometimes we would sit and speak for hours. She helped me to hold my spirits up. She agreed that I did the correct point by ignoring the Emperor and going ahead with the secret marriages. On the day I was to die, I left my friend a tiny note thanking her for her friendship and loyalty. I signed it, “Adore from your Valentine.”

I believe that note began the custom of exchanging love messages on Valentine’s Day. It was written on the day I died, February 14, 269 A.D.

Now, each and every year on this day, individuals keep in mind. But most importantly, they feel about really like and friendship. And when they think of Emperor Claudius, they bear in mind how he tried to stand in the way of adore, and they laugh — since they know that really like can not be beaten!
