When I realized that the well dressed, ethical man standing outside our door was selling vacuum cleaners, I inwardly sighed. But I decided, “What the heck, why not?” He’d never talk me into buying anything as unnecessary or as high priced as one of the door to door vacuum cleaners. But I respect people trying to earn an income and cool calling has to be among the hardest in terms of challenges, so I opened the door to him.OK. Short story. I was fascinated. The salesman was an expert expert at his demonstration, his display and marketing skills. Compared to my aged design vacuum, his vacuum cleaner did anything but dance and sing. To this day I am not sure what happened….maybe the dog hair was the simplicity in which the dog hair vanished. Maybe it the estimated mass delivery of these an incredible number of ” invisible to the bare eye” dirt mites…whatever it was that tilted the decision in his favor, two hours later, I possessed a $1200.00 vacuum cleaner. As he went away he said to me, “You should consider doing some art courses when I know somebody who organizes them.”A decade passed. I extended my art career, marketing myself and my art at a number of venues-at art shows around the region, the specialty shows, journals, in public, on the Internet…and added a couple of classes and private lessons to the mix.The vacuum cleaner lay enshrined in the wardrobe and was pulled out when necessary. A subtle but valuable lesson had been discovered by me. No matter just how much you could have paid for the priciest vacuum cleaner in the world, so as for it to be effective, somebody really has to push it!Several years back, I decided to followup on the salesman’s advice. I contacted the person he had stated, and I was also instructed by that person to a different industry of advertising. Sure enough, inside a few years, that long ago suggestion opened up a new, successful flow of money for an artist businessman with new DVD’s, audio CD’s, e-books and a new collection of art workshops. My “Tale of Two Vacuums” is just a typical exemplory instance of every artist’s art marketing trip. Opportunity conferences, when applied, could start an opportunity per month, annually, or a decade later and the artist just has to be willing and ready to pursue it. The main element for almost any artist in business, is to be conscious of when the time is time to pursue a brand new or additional path of income and then do it.For a time, I known my vacuum cleaner together of my most expensive impulse buys. But before long, I was talking about it together of my better investments! And yes, I still have it.by M Theresa Brown
