The fact of the matter is that I have been asked to go to gatherings just like this in the past where I know basically no one at all, but at my wife’s insistence, I always end up attending.

Why didn’t I want to go?

I had, in my mind, created a false sense of fear of attending.which, thankfully, was not at all based on reality.
