The next item was to appear in a Miami journal (which shall remain nameless) that never got beyond its first issue which was to include a story on a jeweler, a Miami chopper contractor, and a nearby swimsuit artist. The parentheticals are my remarks after-the-fact.Let me show you a tale about a young person who got up early one morning looking for a market and ended up on the cover of an is six o’clock on a Sunday morning. The sun is still not up and I’m waiting below the Watson Island bridge between Miami and Miami Beach feeling a little foolish keeping a bejeweled bra in my hand and a little unpleasant seeing the homeless emerging from the shadows with the stray cats. I’m there to take the cover and pin-up pages (ok, therefore it was not quite politically correct– at least we offered both sexes), alone in the dark with the rats, the cats, desolate zombies looking for a smoke, and an over-the-top bra in my own hand that will produce an experienced Las Vegas showgirl rose with envy. The bra is made of red gas and lined with Swarovski deposits. It’s on loan from the downtown jeweler for the photograph shoot which, God prepared, will happen in a couple of minutes. I’m searching for cops patrolling the area but there are not any as it is too damn early!I understand my belief in humanity will be examined. The photographer who’d decided to do the capture, bailed at the eleventh hour. In desperation I looked to Dennie and DK Cody of Cody Photo who shot our first address. They agree to help me and suggest we plan the shoot for 6am under the bridge to get the morning light on the downtown skyline. This probably had something regarding Dennie’s pioneer nature bloodline (he is an of Buffalo Bill) where no one ever gave a thought about getting up before sunrise.I understand the Cody’s will show, but I am not too sure about others. I’ve never met them. I’ve just spoken for them within the telephone. Comprehending that they’re investing their time limited to copies and publicity of the newspaper makes me wonder if they will actually show. The longer I stand there alone at night, the less I’m sure they will.Dennie and DK will be the first looks to appear out of the darkness that not ask me for a smoke or cash. I hear myself paraphrasing the Cowardly Lion, “I do believe in people, I do believe in people.” Now, if only the rest will show so I could shake loose of my Cowardly Lion tail: the manager of Miami Choppers who agreed to carry one of his custom cycles down to the shoot, and the models.Patrick Jones is the first type to arrive. Entirely from Ft. Lauderdale. He works out to be a great man with lots of enthusiasim for therefore early each day. I suspect he is from pioneer stock too. Before long, Miguel Suarez and his charming spouse Yami of Miami Choppers push up with the very first light of the day and I feel my trust in mankind increasing with the new day’s sun.Since the pin-up pages are single, full-pages devoted to a Dude” and “Dame,” we start shooting Patrick on the cycle quickly to catch the type of light only insomniacs, milkmen, smart anglers, farmers, buffalo hunters, and people living in Ft. Lauderdale who have to obtain up early for the travel in to Miami might find. An hour later I am starting to think our Dame has either postponed without telling me, or is lost. You can only create a guy so many different ways on a helicopter before it becomes difficult to prevent appearing him for some sort of gay publication– not that there’s such a thing wrong with that as Seinfeld and Castanza have reminded us over numerous reruns.Home is only a short drive away. I decide to go back and see if I can obtain our female model via a message. While I am online, her cell phone is called by me. Still nothing. I’ve not just a clue where she is. I travel straight back thinking we can’t just have some guy posing in the newspaper. We are already skating on politically improper thin ice as it is what with pin-ups for crisesakes, but having merely a man and perhaps not a woman really might paint a different sort of picture of what the publication is all about. Therefore, it is with great relief when I turn onto the dirt road beneath the bridge that I see Dennie speaking to a woman. It can not be believed by me, but our model eventually turned up! I park, jump out and hurry up to shake her hand however the young lady stops me quick with “I am perhaps not her.” I look at Dennie. He’s smiling broadly. Appears this woman was searching for the fish market on Watson Island. She had gotten up early to report some fresh fish for dinner that night. She spent my youth in Miami but hadn’t been back in ten years. Since she was away, the town moved the fish industry and the commercial fishing boats. In the limited time I was away, Dennie convinced her to offer for our magazine. She is only wearing flip-flops, pants, and a t-shirt– and no makeup. But we do not care. She is cute, smart, and has a great self-deprecating sense of humor. And she is daring, the kind of character that claims “yes” to new adventures; the kind of individual that has helped this magazine get printed (Little did I understand that this bravery wasn’t discussed by the author). She’s perfect. Her name? Alecia Walker. She is on a break, visiting her brother in Miami. Her home is in Maryland where she works as a Surgical Technologist.Within instances we have her ditching her t-shirt and carrying the “bejeweled bra.” When I see the light bouncing off these Swarovsky crystals, I know it had been supposed to be. We’d not have gotten that startling result, if we had shot the photos with Alecia any earlier. Contact it serendipity– I can not release my Cowardly Lion tail long enough to express it was designed to be. That might be assuming too much. Only time can tell. (I made the mistake of letting go of the tail at the launch party for the magazine that followed this throw weekly later ).I can also maybe not promise if you say “yes” to the magazine your lifetime may change for the greater. I actually do not understand how being on the address of our newspaper and getting the second actually Downtown Dame will make your lifetime better, but ideally with this young energetic Ms. Walker, the Cody’s, Patrick Jones, and the Suarezes, something good will turn out of saying “yes” to us (or at the least to me).
