(1970, Augsburg, Germany) (Barbarian Potato Fields) )It was warm, but with a chill decreasing in to the Barbarian gorge, early each morning, my bones softly shivered. The sun had melted the last of the light patches of snow on the ground, as we went along the potato fields. It was spring in the gorge but he sun was exceptionally hot. We came along the roadside, girls were planting in the areas, and their backs were bent holding seeds in their aprons. As we passed the cemetery a funeral had just started. Joe (the German-Jewish woman I’d been dating), claimed, “My grandmother is buried here, I need to see her, I will be be buried here, beside her appropriate here in the graveyard (she’d leukemia ).”We got out from the car and walked through these thick Jewish-German cast-iron gates. I said, “Gruss Gott,” to a couple persons walking even as we went past them coming up to the gravestone, of Chris’ grandmother.”Its funny people never speak to you in graveyards I guess,” I said to Chris.”Their not here for that,” she said.We stopped by her grandmother’s gravestone, and she spoke something in German, I watched two custodians digging a pit, as if it absolutely was to be filled up afterwards, with the same kind of earth. I looked at the grave to be, and they’d barbarian caps, and high leather boots, and then at Chris. And then the two guys stopped shoveling, and they straightened up their backs, took an out of a quart bottle of alcohol that relaxed besides them: then went on digging into the earth and spreading the earth smoothly round the plot opening, as though to be quickly re-filled later on. Somehow, in this bright spring morning the grave-digging, and the praying over the gravestone-at the ripe old age of twenty-two, looked dreamlike to me, if not unreal.”What each day to die and be buried on,” I said.”I want to be buried right here, right with my grandmother, she used lots of time increasing me,” said Chris.”Well,” I said, “did we really have to come here?” She didn’t answer, she was into different things. The only shadows were created by headstones, or by the people standing by them, and in the sun the work dissolved into my underclothing. It was nice to be warmed by the sun, while you might not rest in it. It was getting late each day, and I was getting hungry. We’d not kept too long, but perhaps too long in the area. I was happy your day was not over, I wanted to do other things, however it was a lovely morning in gorge. We drove from the stuff, past many a vintage type Bavarian hotel and guesthouse, and just houses specifically. And I suppose it had been great to be down in the gorge. It was spring, and I thought by the chill in the air, there could be some ice at night, but tomorrow in early morning the sun again would melt it, for winter months winds and the snow have been spoiled by the sun, once and for all for this season. We were both tired of the cooled air, to include the sun. You may not completely move away from it though. We found a, the innkeeper lay in his seat outside in the sun, a table on the pavement, and beside him his wife stood enjoying the new air. And we stopped the car, and we went up to the inn, and I mentioned “Gruss Gott,” and they came back the greeting, and we lay in the guesthouse and had lunch, we’d our share of the morning sun.No: 510 (11-1-2009) (created on your day of life) Dedicated to Chris S.
