LIGHTING OF THE NUBBLE 19th Annual Christmas in July celebration on Sunday, July 31st, 2011

The Parks and Recreation Department will be sponsoring the 19th Annual Christmas in July celebration on Sunday, July 31st, 2011. Our summer residents and vacationers will have a chance to see the Nubble as it appears each year during the Christmas season. A spectacular view from Sohier Park features the keeper’s house and tower entirely outlined in white lights. The Seacoast Wind Ensemble, beginning at 8:00 pm, will provide entertainment.

Twice each year the lighthouse is adorned with white lights, outlining the houses and tower. The first event is known as “Christmas in July” and the second is the Annual Lighting of the Nubble and both events are held at Sohier Park.

Christmas in July is always the kickoff for our annual of York Days Celebration, which will be Sunday, July 31, 2011. The event runs from 8:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a fun family evening of entertainment and countdown to ‘lights on’ at around 9:00 p.m. The lights remain lit the entire week of our annual York Days celebration. (For 2011 that’s the week of 7/29/2011 through 8/7/2011).

The Annual Lighting of the Nubble is always held the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, which will be Saturday, November 27, 2010. This is a fun family evening with a variety of entertainment. Dress warm for this one!

The World Santa Claus Congress has taken place in the Dyrehavsbakken amusement park (usually shortened to Bakken) north of Copenhagen in Denmark since 1957. Every summer, Bakken is invaded by Santas from around the world who gather to spread good Christmas cheer, have fun and socialize with their peers.

The Danish Santa Team won this year.  USA  Santa Team participated as well, perhaps they will win next year.
