Being of a perverse nature and having a tendency to query factors, I decided to complete some study on the derogatory term ‘luddite’ (as in ” what do you mean you are not going to upgrade to XP, you luddite!”). A luddite in traditional language as of late is somebody who’s opposed to new technologies. Applying this definition, a dedicated luddite would presumably do mathematical calculations utilizing a stick and wet sand on the beach. Supplied the stick wasn’t manufactured, not surprisingly! Appears far fetched, doesn’t it
As it turns out my natural instinct for smelling injustice was correct. The Luddites were a group of English cottage business craftsmen on the early 1800′s who were fighting to retain their way of life. As we know, background is written by the victors, which in this case was not the Luddites. Consequently the smear campaign with the time, promoted by the government and factory owners, stuck and they had been painted as idiots afraid of adjust. It can be this dis-information that gave rise towards the modern definition of a luddite as a technophobe. What they were actually protesting was the destruction of their way of life by the introduction of large-scale textile factories.
And what an enviable way of life it was. Image this, (please visit iTunes download and play ‘Morning’ from the Peer Gynt Suite), a smaller cottage within the bucolic English countryside. Butterflies flit from colourful flower to colourful flower whilst the birds sing sweetly in the lush green trees by the babbling brook. Inside the cottage the weaver is contently finishing his latest creation destined for the markets of Europe and for the reason that the value of his goods in no way alterations, he knows just how much he is going to be paid. His wife and young children are happily helping him in his tasks. Pausing to refresh himself from his labours, he wanders out into the garden to verify on the progress on the spinach, pull several weeds out from the potato patch and throws the chickens some food left more than from the family lunch….. I think I could cope with that!
So these craftsmen, faced with all the life that they had built for themselves being destroyed by machine technologies, petitioned parliament, but to no avail. Ultimately they took a lot more drastic measures and started to destroy the machines that were the supply of their troubles. They weren’t technophobes, they had been individuals reacting to an extremely real threat to their idyllic cottage industry method of life. They did not target all technologies, but rather these technologies that would have an unfavorable effect on their lives and this really is the point.
A rapid look at the real background of the Luddite movement reveals that it was well thought out and that it was not change itself that the Luddites had been afraid of, but rather the unfavorable effects that the transform would bring about. The Luddites predicted pretty accurately that the factories would destroy their largely independent and self-sufficient lifestyles. Their movement was well organised and lasted for more than a year just before the British army violently quashed it.
So an additional right definition of a Luddite could be some a single who’s against technologies that does not improve what it really is to become human and somebody who believes that not all technology is fantastic technologies – take the pogo stick for instance!! Luddites weren’t fighting against technologies but the effects of technology on the excellent of life. Do you remember what computer systems had been going to do for the high quality of life The paperless office, all menial and tedious tasks had been going to automated and computerised and also the typical person would only to operate two days a week! Yeah! Suitable!
In essence most people will not be a lot improved off nowadays than the textile mill workers of the 19th century who were locked inside a factory away from their homes and households, with no superior of enterprise. It’s just that these days the ‘dilbert’ cubical is air conditioned!
The issues that the Luddites faced are nonetheless with us; the distinction for us is the fact that we were born in to them so we feel it is normal.
But very good news. Because of laptop or computer and satellite technology a new generation of pre-Luddite entrepreneurs is emerging. In our droves we are reversing the movement, leaving the factories and starting home based firms just like the weavers of old.
Because of appropriate technology, we’ve the chance to conduct company whilst packing the kids off to school, planting the spinach, feeding the chickens and possibly an afternoon delight in between google-ads.
The laptop has replaced the weaver’s loom, the net has replaced the traveling merchants, software program has replaced the yarn, but I bet you we have the identical aspirations for peace, joy and happiness as our ancestors.
So now is really a good time to program your escape from the open plan office and work station that enslaves you 8+ hours per day, that you just devote 1+ hours acquiring to and 1+ hours finding household from.
Produce the life-style which you want, stop by me and I’ll show you a way.
