If you are traveling to a foreign country and are not fluent in the language, make sure you can always arrive safely back at your lodging by carrying its name, phone number and address with you. Use a piece of hotel stationery or a business card or matchbook labeled with the appropriate information, or write it on a piece of paper. If you get lost, simply show the information to a taxi driver, and, before you know it, you’ll be back at home base.
Renting a car for that trip? Try renting the smallest model of car you find. You can always upgrade when you are at the counter at a smaller amount, than if you do it in advance. They also get rented out quicker than the luxury models, which could mean that you might be able to get a free upgrade regardless.
When planning a flight and searching for the lowest prices, make sure you check the official website for each airline that has flights to your destination. Although low fares are found on websites like Kayak and Travelocity, often the best price is found on the official website of the airline.
For added security, bring a doorstop with you to your hotel room. Some hotel locks are flimsy and not exactly secure, but if you jam a doorstop under the door before you go to bed, you will feel safer. This also works for shower rooms and bathroom doors, where the locks may not be secure enough.
Stick to boiled or bottled water when you travel. It does not matter if you are flying half way across the world or just taking a day trip in your own state. Often your stomach will not react well to different water and it is better to be safe than sorry!
If you’ve ever traveled with young children you’ve undoubtedly been asked far too many times how much further it is. One way of solving this is to get each of the children a map and instruct them how to read it. They’ll be entertained, and you’ll be teaching them a skill that they will use the rest of their lives!
When traveling, stay on top of the local situation. Be sure to check with your US Embassy or Consulate to find out what is happening in the country you are in. Be aware in all situations and don’t risk going into situations that make you feel the least bit uncomfortable.
If you are going on a car trip, be sure your cell phone is charged up and keep it in the car with you. Don’t make the mistake of packing it and putting it in the trunk! If you have an emergency on the road, you will want to be able to get to your cell phone without a moment’s hesitation.
Save time on your road trips by using the available bathrooms every single time you have to make a stop. This will avoid future stops where you only need to go to the bathroom. You can save more time and get more done along your trip by doing this since you never know when there will be a stretch of your trip where restrooms may not show up for a while.
