To repair a larger hole in your walls, use sheet rock. First make the hole into an uniform square or rectangle by cutting away a measured area. Doing this will make the hole bigger, but will allow you to get exact dimensions for repair. Then cut a piece of sheet rock that is the same size as the square or rectangle you just cut from the wall. Place the newly cut piece of sheet rock in the hole and secure in place with drywall nails. Then apply joint compound to the seams. Cover the seams with joint tape, then apply another layer of joint compound and smooth it out. When dry, paint over it with any color.

A basic handyman’s toolbox should contain the following things: hammer, nails, adjustable wrench, vice grips, one interchangeable head screwdriver, a set of Alan wrenches, 3 and 1/2 inch screws, a drill, glue or epoxy putty, a metal file and/or sandpaper, and a handyman belt. These essentials will get you through most basic jobs.

Put fire extinguishers in several rooms of your home. Fire extinguishers are particularly important in the kitchen, but they would be a wise investment for practically every room. Fires can break out in electrical wiring, where a chimney passes through a ceiling, and practically anywhere. Be prepared!

The inspector can look for creosote build-up, cracks in the lining, nests from animals or other problems that could spell disaster. If you’ve lost your key and want to change the lock for safety purposes, you can do a cylinder replacement. If you’re upgrading the lock for added security or to make your door look better, replace the entire unit.

Be sure to cover surrounding surfaces before you begin a home improvement project. Painting, remodeling and demolition can create a big mess. You do not want to end up ruining your cabinets, walls and floors because you did not take the time to protect them before you started. Gather tarps, plastic sheeting and tape, and cover everything up before you get going.
