Improving Your Home Is Easy When You Know What To Do

When creating a budget for a home improvement project, make sure that you factor in “small” expenses like nails, tools, tape, and so forth. The cost of these surprises can really impact your overall budget and leave you scratching your head about how you spent so much. It’s better to plan for them ahead of time.

When doing home improvements for the sole purpose of increasing the value of the home for resale, do some research and find out how to spend the least amount of money for the most increase in value. Basically it is not worth the stress and effort to do a bunch of home improvements if you end up not increasing the value of the home.

Don’t overlook the addition of storage space to your new or existing home. Most homes are substantially lacking in storage space. Add built in bookshelves to the living room or dining room. Turn a broom closet near the kitchen into a food pantry. Small changes and additions will really add up.

Winterize your home’s foundation! Take the time in the fall to go around the foundation of your house and identify any cracks that need sealing up. Big cracks might require big interventions to address but often smaller cracks can be sealed using expanding foam. The money you will save in heat costs will more than make up for any inconvenience!

Avoid making expensive renovations based on personal tastes. Spending $1,000 a tile on your bathroom may seem like a good plan but the odds are if you eventually sell, you will not recoup that money. If the change is not something that can be appreciated by someone other than you, consider doing something different.

If you find that your utility bills are through the roof, consider having someone come and inspect your home for efficiency issues. Often you will find that your windows and doors need to be replaced, and the new ones will pay for themselves in no time with the savings on your heating bill.

Does a tree in front of your house look unkempt? Why not give your home a nice breath of fresh air by getting this tree shaped properly. If you do this, your front yard will change forever. There is no comparison between a trimmed tree and an unkempt one.

Storage projects are an excellent way to get your feet wet in the home improvement process. If you have a broom closet in your home, consider making it into a small pantry. It is easy to attach small racks to the inside of the door and create a place for canned goods and spices. If you are able to add a deeper shelf, you can also store boxes or kitchen appliances that don’t see much use.

Improve your home by installing ceiling fans in your rooms. Ceiling fans can help you save energy when you need to heat or cool your home. In the summer, the fan can create a breeze that has a cooling effect in the room. In the winter, when the spinning direction is reversed, the fan can recirculate warm air, which means less work is required from your heater.

Make the most of your laundry room by adding cabinets, shelves and other storage and stacking your machines if possible. You can also build custom pedestals to go under your machines to hold empty laundry baskets, jugs of detergent, or other items. A clutter-free laundry room not only looks nice, but gives you more room for folding, ironing and sorting clothes.

To give your kitchen a facelift without a complete overhaul, consider painting your counter tops. There are specific types of paint meant for covering Formica or other laminate counters; these paints dry to a hard finish that can withstand the demands of a kitchen surface. Painting your counters is a great way to update your decor or hide stains without the expense of replacing them.

Guessing wrong about a sale item can put you in a very uncomfortable position since you probably won’t be able to return it. Carry a tape measure and a list of the dimensions of your rooms with you all the time. In this way, if you see the perfect item of furnishing, appliance, or fixture on sale, you will be able to measure it to see if it will fit the space you have in mind.

As you can see, choosing what you need to successfully complete a home improvement job isn’t as difficult as it may appear. It just requires doing research, reading regulations, working hard, and asking a lot of questions. The work will pay off, once you see how it can help your home.
