To be fair most of the music is written by professionals and is nice to read but not always easy. As a club organist, you do not get a band call. In fact, you are lucky to get five minutes to scan through between 10 and 15 pieces of music. Some written in different keys and some organist will tell you they hate it when they get a piece of sheet music written in six sharps, six flats, or even seven sharps, and there is a solo especially for you. Oh the joys of live music.

So how do you improve your sight-reading? Well I asked my music teacher this very question when I first started playing in clubs, because I knew I would have to play sheet music that I had never seen before. His answer was to practice sight-reading. He went on to tell me that session musicians practice by picking up any music book start playing on page one and continue until they have finished the book.

Does it work? Yes it does. Try it for yourself, pick up any piece of music you can find, preferably one that you are not that familiar with, then start to play, but do not stop. If you make a mistake it doesn’t matter, you’re not learning how to play the piece of sheet music you are learning to sight read it. You have to be strict with yourself and don’t stop playing, even when there are lots of mistakes.

When you have finished playing the piece of sheet music, you can then go back to the parts of the music that were giving you problems and learn how to play it.

Basically sight reading, is the ability to recognise musical phrases instantly. For instance if I ask you to read and play a 1 bar phrase consisting of Middle C, D, E and F, all crotchets, you should be able to play this phrase almost instantly without even thinking about it. Now, if I write the same phrase out again but two octaves higher, you might have to look at it twice. This is because the notation, two octaves above Middle C, is not as common.

Musical phrases are like words, we tend to learn what we need then stop learning new ones. So it’s probably no surprise that the intelligent people of the world know lots of words and really good keyboard players know lots of musical phrases.

If you really want to test yourself. Get yourself an audience. I practice my sight-reading every week in front of a 200 plus audience. It certainly makes you concentrate.

But it is highly unlikely that guitar players who have more of an instinctive approach to the guitar will ever take the trouble to learn theory and standard music notation. At the same time the people who have made the effort to learn to read music will continue to feel that they have a greater understanding of the guitar and the ability to learn new music faster than guitarists who do not have a background of theory at their fingertips.

You could say that the bottom line is what works for the individual. If you can play guitar but can’t read music, does that make you an inferior guitarist? A weakness with learning from tabs is that timing and rhythm can’t be learnt from tabs but some people write tabs incorporating the elements of sheet music notation that show note values and timing, and this kind of notation is very easy to learn.

There are those guitar players who see sheet music notation as a language that was invented by keyboard players and is not very well suited to the guitar. It should be noted that without learning musical theory as well, learning to read music is just a part of the language of music and is not a great deal more useful than tabs. Also the amount of music theory a guitarist learns is in proportion to his interest in music in general but will not necessarily make him a better guitar player than a guy who doesn’t read music.

It has often been pointed out by guitar players who play in an open or alternate tuning that if you are used to reading and playing music in standard tuning you might find it very difficult to sight read a piece written in an alternate tuning using standard musical notation. If this is true it would suggest that reading standard music is not the key to universal understanding of the guitar.

A dot after any note increases the time value of the note by fifty percent of its original value. Rests that denote silence for different time durations match the four basic note durations above and are counted in the same way:

Half rest – thin horizontal rectangle sitting on the middle line of the staff – silence for 2 beats

What Should you Know?

Todays successful music arranger is dedicated, musically skillful, and has the ability to work with a variety of personalities that include producers, business executives, and performers.

Having an in-depth knowledge of music theory, counterpoint, and orchestration is essential for an arranger. He/she must be able to write quickly (meet deadlines) and accurately, with a minimum of written errors.

An arranger should also have the ability to conduct recording sessions, working with both skilled professional and unskilled amateur musicians.

Who Selects the Music?

One of the first things to be considered when accepting a writing assignment is to decide what type of musical group is best suited for the project. Also to be considered is how many and what type of ensemble to use to best obtain the sound that the producer expects. This is usually accomplished through joint meetings between the arranger and producers. Everyone concerned must strike a compromise when musical and budgetary decisions are involved.

For example, a film that takes place during the eighteenth century would most likely use a touch of classical music as written by Haydn or Mozart, and stringed instruments would be the dominant instruments.

Conversely, a film set in an urban, contemporary setting will most likely require the use of percussion, a touch or rap or Latin music, or abrasive-sounding textures in order to reflect the energy and tension of a fast-paced city.

Do Professional Arrangers Continue to Study?

Successful arrangers continue to study scores of the master composers of the major music periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, and Contemporary, including the various styles of jazz.

Today the arranger must be a composer as well as an arranger, in that he/she is often required to composer introductions, interlude, and endings for musical arrangements.

How About the New Music Technology?

Todays arranger must be comfortable with and have a working knowledge of current music software systems such as Sibelius or Finale, as well as sequencers, and midi functions. This is of utmost importance since most producers are not trained musicians and often require the arranger to let them hear the arrangement before signing off on a costly budget that includes renting a recording studio, hiring musicians and other items for music production.
