He had already murdered Zedekiah’s, the King of Judah, children before his eyes just before blinding him and sending him in chains to Babylon. Nebuzaradan had massacred the Cohanim. Why did he gather this group to bring to his king? Why did he not execute them in Jerusalem? Why was this considered the final step of the exile?

The god “Bel” is mentioned two more times by name in the Bible, both in Jeremiah. Read Jeremiah 50:2, 51:44. The name “Nebo” appears 12 more times in the Bible, but not as the name of a Babylonian god; apparently this is also the name of a mountain, a city, a person, and possible an area of land. Another name for the god “Nebo” is “Nabu”, who was known as the god of learning. We do see the name “Nebo” in the name of a Babylonian official. Read Jeremiah 39:3. This was a common practice among royalty or nobility, to name your son after a favorite god.

According to Wikipedia, Saddam considered himself the reincarnation of Nebuchadnezzar and had the inscription “To King Nebuchadnezzar in the reign of Saddam Hussein” inscribed on bricks inserted into the walls of the ancient city of Babylon during a reconstruction project he initiated; he named one of his Republican Guards divisions after Nebuchadnezzar.

Under Nebuchadnezzar, Babylon became a thriving and prosperous marketplace. Babylon, referred to in ancient times as “a great city,” drew the nations of the Mediterranean world into closer contact.

Now, three years since the establishment of the New City and six months following the Great Disappearance, Babylon was the de facto capital of the world. The United Nations had reformed itself and had announced the formation of an One World Government that would rule the world from Babylon.

For years critics had dismissed the Book of Daniel, partly because there was no evidence that a king named Belshazzar ruled in Babylon during that time period or that a great city like Babylonia existed. However, later archaeological research confirmed that the reigning monarch, Nabonidus, appointed Belshazzar as his co-regent while he was away from Babylon. Forty-five thousand digs at over twenty-five thousand different locations later, each dig has supported evidence of the Bible’s historical record: Balshazzar is mentioned by name, King’s Darius and Cyrus, discovering remains of the Hittite’s and Babylonian’s civilizations, etc. But the archeological evidence, as overwhelming as it is, will have to wait until chapter two.
