Residential elevators are becoming less of a luxury for home owners, so one option for modifying a large home with an elevator has been custom elevators. All of the same features of home elevators are in place in a custom elevator, but what differentiates one of these apart is the design. Instead of relying on a strictly wood or metal design, custom elevators can conform to the design of your home, or, essentially, they can be designed any way you would like. For an ordinary home elevator, the planning involves choosing the type best suited to the house and installing the elevator and, if needed, the machine room. But with a custom elevator, architectural planning of the design and which materials are going to be used is involved, as well.

For the basic information about home elevators, four basics types are available. The most common is a hydraulic lift elevator. While this type of home elevator needs a machine room to operate and in case of emergencies, the elevator is lifted from the ground up. Hydraulic is considered the safest design for emergencies and natural disasters like earthquakes and, as a result, is the most popular for all homes. A traction elevator is another type, and one of its benefits is not needing a machine room to operate. As the design uses cables and weights to move the elevator car, however, the design isnt as safe for regions prone to earthquakes and other natural disasters. Another type of elevator that doesnt need a machine room is a pneumatic lift elevator which, in a home, involves a clear chute that moves a car up and down by suction. And, if youre trying to go green, an overhead winding drum elevator is often the best option, as oil isnt used in its operation.

In terms of design, both hydraulic and pneumatic lift elevators appear to be the most popular, not only for safety issues but for design possibilities, as well. A pneumatic custom elevator, for example, allows your home to have a panoramic view when ascending or descending through your house. Hydraulic elevators, with a larger design, give more options for metal and work working and additional details in the interior of the elevator cab. Essentially, design for custom elevators is limitless, but consulting with an architect or designer beforehand can assist you in finding the best fit for your home.

After the type of elevator and style has been decided, the next step is to install the custom elevator. In a home, this often means having space set aside for the elevator shaft and machine room. Custom elevators are installed like any ordinary residential elevator, but the final result looks more polished.

As individuals grow older, climbing up and down the stairs becomes a wearisome as well as hazardous task. It is then that one thinks of finding the right residential elevator, which can ease the tediousness of such daily activities. With increase in the demand for residential elevators, manufacturers are competing with each other to provide a range of custom mobility solutions for the physically challenged.

For ease and convenience, you can choose a space-efficient and convenient solution that is easier to install, maintain and operate. From the user’s point of view, consider a residential elevator with several features including cab size, cab furnishings, speed, safety systems, door configuration, external and internal controls, weight capacity, travel, fixtures/accessories and entrance. To transport passengers or freight, choose a vacuum drive elevator, roped-hydraulic drive elevator, winding drum elevator or a counter-weighted chain drive elevator. From the technical point of view, look at the type and specification of the motor, controls, brake, pit depth, and guide rails in a system. Behind the design, look for the reliability and safety it ensures.

Before buying a residential elevator, gain as much knowledge as you can about residential elevators. Compile a list of features that you want in your elevator, which will help you in finding the right residential elevator. Before identifying the quality provider, check out the various types of elevators home elevator companies offer. Make a comparative study about the providers by taking account of factors such as cost of the elevator, location where you want to install it, warranty and services.

Depending on your residential area, budget and requirements, you can choose the right residential elevator that has the capability to enhance your standard of living. An already installed residential elevator can considerably improve the resale value of homes.

Horizontal Transportation

Current trends in urban planning coupled with the need to make ever more challenging development sites easily accessible often create a demand for short range passenger transportation. Applications vary from simple reversible shuttle type systems, operating over only a few hundred metres, to complex networks connecting a series of buildings or amenities requiring multiple active vehicles operating over a loop guideway. Automatic People Movers (APMs) will in many cases provide the right solution to the accessibility needs of a site but background experience and knowledge coupled with specific design skills are vital to ensure appropriate designs and cost effective long term solutions are adopted.

System capacities may vary from a few hundred to thousands of persons per direction per hour. We have applied our own expertise to the field of APMs and developed a linear motor based concept design which we have nicknamed “Synchrorail”. Some concept visualisations of the system are shown here.

“Hectometric” people movers (APMs operating over a few hundred metres) were identified by us as early as the 1970s as an integral part of the overall need to move more people within and around new developments, or into and out of mass transit interchanges – continuously, efficiently and cost effectively.

Performance of systems in all operating aspects and review of their suitability to potential applications commenced at that time. This has enabled us to build up a comprehensive library of system suppliers, their products and associated performance parameters.

To this database has been added bespoke computer simulation software plus CAD based visualisation techniques to design and plan systems on a generic basis.

Typical areas for horizontal transportation applications include:

Retail Complexes
Linear Developments
Transport Interchanges
Mass Transit Feeders
Remote Parking
Park and Ride
Airport Terminal or Satellite Links
Leisure Industry Developments
Theme Parks
Town Centre Circulation
Exhibition Centres

The only understanding I previously had of how lifts work came from a number of perilous film scenes where the hero or heroine is trying to escape a fire/monster/axe wielding murderer. According to these films it seems a series of cables, locks, brackets and weights seem to interconnect to operate your average lift, but how do they really work?

We all see and use lifts and elevators on a regular basis, but how many of us know how they really work? Not many, which is not surprising given that there are few lifts where you can actually see the components in operation. Usually the only parts of the lift you see are the call button and the interior of the car. Occasionally you might come across a glass life where the elements are exposed, and you can actually see the various components in operation as the lift is used. Some types of lift such as external platform lifts sometimes have more of their mechanisms on show, as of course being outside there is less building to hide the workings behind.

There are two basic passenger carrying lift designs: hydraulic lifts and roped lifts. Hydraulic lifts operate by means of a hydraulic ram underneath the car which raises and lowers the lift via a piston. A motorised pump forces fluid from a tank located outside of the lift shaft into the piston which elevates the car, shutting off at a predetermined point allowing the car to be held at each floor level for entry and exit of passengers. For the lift to descend the motor simply has to allow the release of a measured amount of the fluid and a slow, smooth rate. Hydraulic lifts are normally used up to 5 to 8 floors and can have a typical speed of 100-200 feet per minute.

Roped lifts, otherwise known as cable borne elevators (the most common ones in films requiring mild peril and escape scenarios) are commonly thought to be the most popular elevator design available. Instead of being pushed and pulled from underneath as in the case of hydraulic lifts, the roped lift is lifted and lowered by means of a series of cables located above the car. Steel ropes operate over a pulley which grips the ropes. An electric motor operates the pulley, and as it is operated, so is the pulley and ropes. The ropes are also connected to a counter weight to help conserve energy. Despite my film analogy it is thought that there have been no recorded cases of elevators free falling as is often seen on screen.

Specialised lifts such as hydraulic lifts for disabled access are often tailored to the building in which they are situated, and can usually hold 1 to 5 people, depending on their design. Wheelchair lifts will normally carry just one person at a time, including stairisers which platform lifts which run up the side of staircases where an actual elevator is impractical such as in listed or otherwise awkward buildings.

As we develop technology that allows us to lead more extraordinary lives in nearly every aspect, we’re also working hard to help those who suffer from disabilities to lead normal, pain-free lives with the independence that they deserve. New solutions are being created every day to help better afford a sense of regularity where it is frequently lost.

Issues with mobility are some of the most common that disability and age can bring; nothing is quite as frustrating as losing the ability to get around or feeling pain and discomfort while trying to do some of the simple things in life. Wheelchair users are those who suffer the most, sometimes losing access to places in their own home that they’ve never had trouble with before.

When installed in and around the home, in commercial buildings, schools and medical facilities, platform lifts allow wheelchair and disabled access to anyone. With simple controls and a sleek, compact design they are the ideal solution to many problems that stem from poor mobility. Take a look at these applications of indoor and outdoor lifts.

Second-Floor Access

If installing an elevator simply isn’t an option or a cost that you can cover, a platform lift can provide access to the second story of nearly any building. Their sleek design allows them to fit almost anywhere while minimising the need for invasive renovation work.

Outdoor Access

Outdoor lifts work both in wet weather and during the hottest of days. They’re freestanding and won’t require any digging or pits to install, making them suitable for concrete surfaces outside the home or office. An outdoor platform lift allows access to decks and over rises big or small to anyone who suffers from impaired mobility.

Retrofitting to Comply With Building Standards

If your business or facility needs to comply with disability access standards and you’re looking for a solution that doesn’t involve an extensive rebuilding or interior renovation project, a platform lift might be the perfect solution. Retrofit an outdoor lift instead of a space-wasting ramp and overcome steps, ledges and other multi-level interior design elements that prohibit access to those who suffer from mobility issues. Platform lifts are the easiest solution to nearly any height-related access problem.

Provide Access to Parking

Parking lots are often built without the consideration of disability access. Some buildings choose to designate a drop off point for wheelchair accessible vans at the front of the building, but this can frequently cause issues with pedestrian traffic and safety. Create an accessible parking lot by installing a platform lift to overcome stairs or other multi-level obstacles. A platform lift will fit where a ramp doesn’t while saving you on building and remodeling costs.

Easily Incorporated into Your Building’s Design

The planning stages of a build are the best time to incorporate a platform lift inside and outside the home, office or any other facility. Talk to your architect and lift installer and have them collaborate on the design of a truly ideal, accessible building. Indoor and outdoor lifts allow you to create a building that remains accessible without forcing you to compromise on any elements of design.

What if we always had to take the stairs, no matter how tall the building or whether or not we had a disability? Elevator service is something we take for granted in our modern times. Much like the ubiquitous Internet, technologically advanced automobiles, and contemporary progressions in various fields of medicine, were less inclined to take notice of what seems so readily available. Imagine a world without elevator service, where we had to walk multiple flights of stairs to get to our hotels rooms, or the top floors of the library, or any large office building where we have an interview. Its imperative that we have elevators that run properly and efficiently, ensuring that we can get from point A to point B without breaking a sweat or needing CPR once we arrive where were going. Its about safety and convenience, and theres no discounting one for the other as they go together. No matter what the industry, some companies are better than others. When it comes to lift operators, theres no skimping on getting a professional to supervise the installation, repair, upgrade, or maintenance of your elevator service.

Look for top-notch modernizations and installations that offer hydraulic- or traction-driven assemblies, with state-of-the-art microprocessors and controllers to guide the process throughout. Another thought to ponder is the scope of warranty or maintenance programs available when you decide to go with your lift vendor. Make sure it includes both cab and entranceway maintenance for the lift, and that this is scheduled for graded inspection on a regular basis. With modern technology nowadays, there should also be some kind of computerized analysis for the vertical traffic flows, along with a timing mechanism to ensure timeliness and efficiency with your lift. If the manufacturer doesnt seem to be the most upstanding of operators, or appears new to the game, its probably best to give a little research time to develop a better understanding for what your needs are.

Consider what it means to have elevator service that runs efficiently, effectively, and swiftly, and youll probably have a better idea for what it means to manage a professional building. There are numerous aspects that go into the effective oversight of a large-scale operation like a commercial building, especially some of the larger ones that take up several city blocks and reach way up into the clouds. The last thing you want to worry about is how well people are able to gain access up and down, from the ground floor to the top floor, of your building. Even if its just your local library with a simple two-story structure, there are plenty of elderly people who will be very happy and thankful to know they wont have to take the stairs. That is, if the lift is working properly.

There are a lot of people who have difficulty climbing the stairs. This is often due to illnesses like arthritis, which can leave you unsteady on the stairs and make bending the knees painful. Finding a way to allow full access to a home is very important and since a fall on the stairs has such a high rate of injury, it is important to take precautions if using the stairs is difficult. One way that people make using the stairs safer is to use a stair lift in the home.

Stair lifts are designed to move a person safely between floors. They carry an individual at a slow and steady rate in a chair or standing on a small platform that is called a perch. The perch lifts are only recommended for use in cases of medical necessity, due to the fact that you must have a good sense of balance to use this type of standing stair lift.

The seated stair lift is far more common and safer than its standing cousin. These use a chair that often has a seat belt, with optional chest restraints. The chair is controlled by a constant pressure switch that, depending on the model, is built into the armrest or is an attached hand control. The constant pressure switch means that the lift will only move while pressure is being applied to the button. As soon as pressure is removed, the lift stops moving, which greatly helps to increase safety.

Another safety feature that is built into quality stair lifts is a footrest sensor. This detects objects that might be on the stairs and stops the lift if it detects something. While it is still very important to not leave items on the stairs, it will act as an extra way to ensure a safe environment is present on the staircase.

Most stair lifts are attached to the stairs themselves. An aluminum metal track is used, which is strong, but also lightweight. The chair or perch moves up and down the track, with up to one individual on it. If space is limited or if the staircase is curved, the track will sometimes be attached to the wall instead.

The installation of a stair lift is something that can and often is done by the homeowner. Several available dumbwaiters are designed in a manner that allows the homeowner to do the installation, without having to pay an installation team. The great thing about these do-it-yourself stair lift kits is that even if you do decide to pay to have it installed, the installation is still much less than other lifts. Many of the companies that sell lifts that require professional installation charge exurbanite rates to complete the installation.

Even though many feel comfortable doing a self-installation, take a look at the instructions before you order. Most sites have them readily available via download. If you dont think you will be comfortable doing it on your own, go ahead and set up the installation while you are ordering, so you can quickly and easily have your safety lift installed.

Sean Noughtly is very familiar with lifting aids for the home and business. A stairlift is a device that can greatly improve the safety in your home and help prevent falls. Preventing falls is always a better option then waiting till they happen and dealing with them, which is why these lifting aids are found in homes across the country.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh is in the final stages of a ?18.6 million overhaul which will increase gallery space by around 60 percent and boost annual visitor numbers from 200,000 to 300,000.
Designed by Architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, the gallery was first opened in 1889. Located on a hill overlooking Edinburgh, the building cut quite a swath with its grand, neo-gothic facades of red sandstone dwarfing the street below. But a hundred years on and the gallerys fortunes have changed considerably. Things became so bad that by the mid-1990s the gallery was on the brink of closure.
Something had to be done.
In 2009 renovation work began with the aim of the project to restore and reveal much of Andersons work within the building and to show many more works of art than were previously on display. The development of the gallery as a first-class visitor experience was also paramount to National Galleries of Scotland as the original gallery was a gift to the Scottish people.
In the original building, movement around galleries was very restricted so the project architects, Page/Park, decided to transform circulation routes and improve access. This has been achieved with the design of a bespoke 48-person capacity hydraulically powered glass lift running through the core of the gallery. Lerch Bates has worked with Page/Park since the early design conception to bring a lift that is not only functional in terms of moving people and artifacts but, as it has three sides and the roof completely made from glass, also provides the perfect viewpoint as it moves slowly through the gallery.
