Even in the world of start-ups, travel industry start-ups are notoriously difficult to pull off (quipped travel tech site TNooz last summer, “attention all start-ups: disrupting the travel industry is extremely hard”). The only thing more difficult than creating a travel start-up is creating a travel marketplace for touristic services (accommodations, activities, tours, equipment rentals, etc.) , since with a marketplace you have to get lucky enough or good enough to lock down both buyers and sellers.

So the founders of the new social media-driven travel marketplace site Urbita (http://www.urbita.com), which just soft-launched last week, deserve at least some credit for sheer ambition. And believe it or not-after looking around-we think this one actually has a chance.

Promising to help travelers “Be a local, worldwide,” the site will connect individual travelers with individual vendors, so that travelers will be able to create entire local trips without leaving the site. The basic reason that’s never worked before is scale; it’s nearly impossible to get a sufficient number of vendors to connect lodging with food with fun. There have also been trust and risk problems, since paying in advance for niche services in isolated locales isn’t always reliable.

Although we initially will focus on services in Latin America, our reach is worldwide and so is the scope of our information.

The social person-to-person marketplace isn’t open yet, so right now the site is limited to browsing destinations and points of interest. It should be open in a couple of months.
