To a large extent manufacturing has greatly benefited from the use of machines in its processes, which has arguably had a detrimental effect on how manufacturing occurs – it has saved time, it has increased productivity, reduced rejections per batch and allowed operations managers to calculate what the productivity of a given specification will be. For the history of CNC machining too, the changes in technological advances have been paramount for providing greater degrees of accuracy and harmony between components. How try would this be for precision engineering? Moreover, the effectiveness of CNC machining has taken away man-made manufacturing mistakes; the role of tiredness, the abilities of the human eye, the calculations of the human mind, the individual technique of a particular engineer, all aspects come into play. What technology has done (as ever) has removed these variables for numerical prowess.

Additionally the capabilities of modern day machines – self-reliant, never tiring – means that machines can go for as long as the materials desired to make a product are in abundance. Furthermore, they (CNC machines) have to a degree made the one time engineer more of a supervisor of the machine rather than the creator of the piece that is being made. Despite that being the case, it is well documented that CNC machining allows for a greater number of components being produced at greater speed. Likewise, the growth of software packages has meant that CNC machining can easily produce parts that would require multiple steps to manufacture by hand. This has dramatically decreased lead times and costs.

Finally, the changing dynamics of engineering practises has arguable led to safer working environments as employees are able to monitor manufacturing progress from a computer system whilst machines conduct the work. In this sense, the employee rarely has to interact directly with the CNC machine itself. One could argue that these changing relationships are enabling businesses to become more creative in what they seek to design as the limitations of what is possible are broken. Further as CNC machining can work consistently (as previously mentioned) project managers/design engineers can estimate how long it will take to bring a design to the point of prototype and in turn, wholesale manufacture requirements. These benefits are essential tools in todays design needs and more directly, save money as out dated techniques take longer and are open to design flaws/manufacturing rejections. Overall the effectiveness/requirement of CNC Machining is becoming ever more ingrained in manufacturing.

CNC milling machines are also known as machining centers. These machines are computer controlled as with all CNC machines. They operate on the Z axis and are vertical mills that move vertically. They offer precision and speed where one aspect does not affect the other. These CNC milling machines offer a cost effective alternative to hand engraving, flat surface work.

The most advanced of the milling cnc machines are the 5 axis machines that offer a wide range of capabilities. Horizontal milling machines are available and this is usually the lines of the 5 axis CNC milling machines. Basically, with the 5 axis machines, virtually any project can be done. One could sculpt the human head with ease with one of these machines.

At one time the machines were quite expensive to purchase and to operate. Now, because of the declination in the cost of computers and the availability of free operating systems, the CNC milling machines have dropped to more affordable prices. This has allowed many more shops to take advantage of this type of technology and has caused more competition in the machining industry. The shops now usually specialize in the type of work that they do.

There is a variety of different tools that can be used with this type of machinery. In the US, the most common CNC miller tooling is the CAT tooling; however, now a better alternative called BT tooling as raised the bar. BT tooling can be easily confused with CAT, so be careful.

The CNC milling machines can be either purchased brand new or as a used product. There are companies who specialize in milling CNC machines that cater to specific industries. A used milling machine or machining center can be more cost effective and can come with some type of service and warranty package if purchased from the right dealer. With these types of machines, because of the larger expense that it can put onto a company, it is tempting to go with a cheaper, used version; however, that may not always be best. Make sure that if you do purchase a used machine that there is some kind of guarantee and that the machine was taken out while still in operation.

CNC milling machines can come in many different types. There are gun drilling machines, horizontal boring mills, five axis milling machines, and many more. There are several different manufacturers of these machines that include top brands such as: Heidenhain, Phoenix, TOS and VTEC just to name a few. If interested in purchasing a top of the line machine, make sure that the dealer offers service solutions to help with upkeep and maintenance of the machine in the early stages until someone from your company can learn how to do it. Well established dealers can offer rebuilding services of old CNC milling machines. This too can be a cost effective alternative to purchasing brand new.

To learn more about CNC milling machines, contact your dealer. They will be able to offer answers to your questions on a wide range of issues that is related to CNC milling machines.

I think its safe to say that not many people know about the process of plastic extrusion. Thanks to intelligent and inventive workers in the field, it has become a relatively easy thing to become good at. There is fine machinery working together in order to cultivate your roll of tape, or the frame of your window. Without plastic extrusion, many things that we take for granted could not be made nearly as efficiently or effectively. Studying plastic extrusion has been a real treat! Ive also been sharing what Ive learned researching the subject with others around me. So little is known about something so common!

The core of the entire process is, of course, the material. The very first thing youll need is a material with the title of thermoplastic. The form of thermoplastic that youll need is that of small beads. As in many professions, there is much plastic extrusion jargon to learn. For example, this thermoplastic in the shape of small beads is most commonly referred to as “resin.”

The next step is getting the resin into what is really the beginning of the machinery process, the barrel. The best and most widely used way of going about this is using a hopper. A hopper is special in that it gravity feeds the thermoplastic resin needed to make plastic products. In order to make a more attractive plastic product, before placing the resin in the hopper, add colorants to jazz things up!

Once a specialist operates the hopper, successfully feeding the resin into the barrel, it meets what is called a “feedthroat.” All a feedthroat essentially is, is an opening at the rear bottom of the barrel. The resin travels through the feedthroat and it meets an industrial-sized screw. The screw pushes the resin at generally 120 rpm back into the barrel, which then begins to gradually heat itself.

Most of the commonly used extruders come equipped with cooling fans. What this accomplishes is to keep the temperature below a certain point (which a specialist establishes at the beginning of the process). The screw is also a truly essential bit of the process. There are five possible zones in your average thermoplastic screw, and depending on what plastic company youre looking into, the specialists refer them to as different names!

The now completely molten plastic travels down the length of the screw. At this point in the process, the plastic has to travel through several compact screens. This is for the sole purpose of clearing up anything that may have contaminated it. Holding up the screens, is a device called a “breaker plate.” This is shaped much like a hockey puck, with holes drilled into it.

A truly grand finale for this plastic extrusion process (except of course, the cooling) is what happens next. The liquid plastic travels from the screens to the die. The die is such an important part of the machinery, mostly due to the fact that it gives the plastic its shape. Relying solely on the company and what the final product will turn out to be, the die shapes the plastic.

Now, even though this is an interesting act in this plastic extrusion play, this is the part where a specialist must be especially careful. If the stream of liquid plastic becomes too unsteady, you can find yourself out of luck! The plastic may come out with stresses and weaknesses on it. If theyre bad enough, a specialist may have to throw them out! After coming all this way!

The cooling process must be handled with extreme care. Often times, plastic companies place the product in a sort of bath to cool off, yet this takes longer than one might expect. Plastic products are truly great insulators of heat and cooling them quickly is no easy job. Plastic extrusion is not at all in the slightest a simple process, and learning about the things that go into what makes the weather stripping, deck railing, and wire insulation at my home was a one of a kind experience!

Custom rubber molding products have many uses across a wide range of applications. In fact, it is difficult to imagine an industrial or manufacturing setting that doesnt employ these items in some capacity. For example, the automobile industry utilizes many customized rubber components in the production of new vehicles. How each of those components is produced depends largely on a number of factors, including how it will be used and the costs associated with its production.

There are 3 Primary Methods of Producing Rubber Molding Products:

1. Compression molding is the oldest and most simple rubber molding process available. With this process, an uncured “slug” of rubber is placed in a cavity between two plates that are then pressed together. (The cavity between the two plates is in the desired shape of the final product). Pressure is applied to both plates which forces the uncured rubber to conform to the shape of cavity. The mold remains closed until the rubber is cured and the process is complete.

Compression molds are the most simple to create and are therefore the most economical to use. However, producing rubber molding products in this manner is a manual process which requires more time and effort to perform. Of the 3 production methods, compression molding also yields the most inconsistent results and takes the longest time for the rubber to cure.

2. With transfer molding, an uncured slug of rubber is placed in a chamber above the molds customized cavity. Pressure is then applied directly to this chamber in an effort to force the rubber through small openings called “sprues.” The rubber then passes through (“transfers”) those openings to fill the molds cavity. Once complete, the rubber remains in the mold until it is fully cured.

Transfer molding offers faster curing times than the compression method because of the heat produced during the transfer process. Also, because the mold remains closed throughout the process, less excess material is able to seep out, which results in less waste material. In terms of consistency, this process offers better results than compression molding. On the other hand, these molds have a more complex design and carry a correspondingly higher price tag to produce.

3. Injection molding is the most sophisticated method of producing rubber molding products and produces the most consistent results. With this method, the uncured rubber is softened prior to being injected into the mold through a series of small openings. This method is entirely automated and uses a precise amount of raw materials. With injection molding, the cavity plates remain closed throughout the process, thereby limiting the amount of excess rubber that can escape the cavity. This, in turn, limits the amount of excess flash that is produced. However, injection molds are the most complicated to create and represents the most expensive option.

Each rubber molding production method is better suited for some applications than others. This is due to the inherent advantages and disadvantages associated with each process. As with most things, there is a clear relationship between cost and quality, with the highest-priced alternative (injection molding) yielding the most consistent and uniform results. However, not all jobs require this level of sophistication and precision. In those cases, less precise but more cost-effective options are worth exploring.

Gone are the days when all things in metal were considered the best. Move over metal, and make way for Precision Plastic Machining. Plastic is durable, affordable and so much more flexible than metal. If you can dream it, you can build it – in plastic. Plastic Machining is the need of the hour today. Scores of industries including medical, fluid-handling, aerospace and even semi-conductor industries heavily depend on Machined Plastic products.

Plastic, though being such a versatile substance, needs precision and efficiency to be molded in to shapes that are useful, yet cost effective. Low electrical conductivity, low density, durability and transparency are some aspects that that make plastic so adaptable. There are few companies who provide expertise in engineering capabilities to give the highest quality Machined Plastic. These experts use the latest CNC equipment along with conventional machines that are capable of machining virtually any plastic component you may require.

Precision Machining of plastics have several advantages over their metallic counterparts. During the machining process plastics are able to warp, bend, shrink and even expand. Another advantage that Plastic Machining experts get is a special material pricing, compared to metals.

Precision Plastic Machining is not the same as injection molding. They are different in many ways. It is easier to machine tighter substances whereas injection molders have problems with that. Also, unlike some injection molded parts, Machined Plastics don’t need secondary operations. With this new technique you can also save up on tooling and maintenance costs. Injection molding also proves costlier during low volume runs. Another major advantage Plastic Precision Machining has over injection molding is that there’s no quantity variance on orders, whereas molders usually have an attrition rate. Based on quantities, design, tolerances and material, machining of plastics offers competitive pricing on production runs.

One company that has made it’s mark in the field of Precision Machining is Tamshell. They work with renowned manufacturers such as Ensinger, Quadrant, Westlake, DuPont and others. This gives them an edge over their competitors to get firsthand leading edge material information. Tamshell experts work with their clients’ engineering team to process the material that is best suited for their application, thus saving time and money. They offer cutting edge processes including CNC Turning, CNC Swiss Screw Machining and CNC Milling to help create a new project or redesign any existing part to bring it up to quality.

Plastic injection moulding is a process where plastic parts are manufactured. As we all know, plastic is economical and versatile stuff that is used almost in every corner of the globe. Concrete examples of injection-moulded plastics are your keyboards, mouse, and those plastic soda bottles you throw every day.

The Process

To a motivated individual, the process of plastic moulding can be easy especially once provided with quality tooling. The process starts with mould preparation. Here, plastic pellets are fed to the large container called auger or screw, which is powered by a hydraulic. Once the auger inside the cylinder turns, the pellets are fed up to the augers grooves until the pellets are melted.

Next is the injecting of the melt into the mold. The melted plastic is positioned or injected into a split-die mold. Injecting is done once the auger pushes forward the moulds with the help of a high pressure about 10,000 to 30,000 psi. Then, the injection mould solidifies and separates itself from the cylinder. This stage of the process is called solidification.

Now, the mould is allowed to cool forming into its desired design or shape. This cooling process is the longest stage. Basically, it consumes about 85 percent of the entire cycles time.

After solidification, the mold undergoes the process of demoulding or unloading. Here, the molds clamp is opened to allow the molds ejection. Then the cycle is repeated.

Design Considerations

When considering injection moulding designs, each design needs to obtain angled surfaces. The purpose of this is to allow easy removal of the part from the mold. Typically, the angles should measure about one to two degrees for surface designs with a minimum of five inches on its wall thickness. Like for instance in soda bottles, thin and thick wall are both economical and possible. However to other designs, make sure youve got uniform wall thickness on your designs corner and ribs, you will be able to save a lot from your manufacturing efforts and costs.

Tooling

Injection moulding tooling is no longer a problem today. There are now numbers of mould tooling manufacturers ready to cater you the latest equipments and software to meet your plastic moulding needs. Today, no matter what your design is, you can get a injection moulding tool without having them run for re-designing. In case there are certain changes about the designs, the changes are just minimal and most of all for your own benefit and not theirs.

Truly, there are lots of things to take advantage of in this kind of profession. However, before you can take them all, you should also take all the challenges behind the process. Good luck!

If you have to work on plastic injection moulding, it is important to learn about a few tips to help make your work easier. It is not uncommon to encounter some problems from time to time. Having a good understanding about what to do can have you finish your projects properly and do a perfect job.

It is advisable to work on plastic injection moulding as it is recommended by manufacturers. Consider checking out some of conditions first and understanding how the environment changes with time. This allows you to select the best materials for the project.

If you are working on short mouldings and you are not able to get adequate shot capacity, the following tips can help. Consider increasing feed settings so as to get the desired effect. Try to also confirm that the rate of plasticizing is as recommended by manufacturers. Failure to make such changes can lead to inconsistent work.

You can also consider transferring the material to a larger capacity machine. This is a good solution if you are working on shot mouldings but you are unable to get adequate shot capacity.

Another problem associated with this type of mouldings is whereby the material freezes off even before one has filled the mould completely. There are a few things that can be done. You can consider increasing the injection time. If doing this does not solve the problem, consider raising the temperature of the material. This should be done gradually and evenly.

Other useful solutions you can use include using a higher MFI grade. It easily solves the problem. Also find out if the venting is adequate. Some of the things to check out in this case include purge gates, runners and events. To correct the gates, find out if it is possible to enlarge them. The same should be done to runners and vents. Finish by balancing where necessary.

Plastic mouldings can be used in projects that involve delamination. If you are not getting good results, consider running the following checks. Find out if there is any kind of contamination if the material seems incompatible with the surface. The material could also be contaminated if the skin of the plastic moulding freezes off prematurely.

If it is not contaminated, consider purging the machine with some of the material. Rinse it once before filling it with the plastic mouldings. In the event it freezes off prematurely, you can raise the temperature. It is easier to work with it in this way. Other considerations include lowering injection speeds or making adjustments as you see fit.

Sometimes, you can use plastic mouldings in other projects such as flashing. In this case, try to reface or realign the surface before injecting the material. Also check that the surface of the mold is flat. Take a look at all the tools you need for the project and make sure that they are in good condition.

In the event that you get problems during plastic injection moulding, you can increase the time taken to cool the material. If there is too much pressure in the cavity, simply reduce the injection pressure to correct the problem.

CNC plastic machining stands for computerized numeral controlled plastic machine. As the name suggests these machines are programmed in numbers so that it can drill, grind, rip, and tap etc in the exact position as per your specifications. Accordingly, the operating parameters of the CNC can be altered via a software load program. Plastic injection molding is also comparatively a new area of operation in plastic mold manufacturing.

The importance of plastics today:

The heavy cost of metals has given rise to a huge demand for plastic products. And this has gradually given rise to newer technologies in it. And among all these technologies, CNC plastic machining is probably most popular for its high productivity and cost effectiveness. These machines are great for rabid prototyping of plastic parts, molds and dies. This machining procedure makes plastic molding a breeze due to factors like temperature and humidity variance does not have to be manually controlled. And of course, as you can see this does have effect on the overall quality of the output.

Checklists for getting the right CNC plastic machine:

The market today is full of these companies that claim to be the best. But, you should not believe in their tall claims. Here are a few things you should look out for. See, that the machining vendors you are availing your services from have machining, castings and forging ability. Also, find out if they have lead time reduction, close machine tolerances, standardized procedures. The quality of the raw materials used for the purpose also makes a huge difference in the final output. Also check if they have ISO 9001-2000 plastic machining facility.

Areas of application of CNC plastic machining:

Among the various areas of application which uses the services of CNC plastic machining are medical, food, electronics, oil and seismology industries etc. Tensile strength coupled with the ability to perform in extreme temperatures make these kinds of plastics an ideal choice for all the above mentioned industrial sectors. Injection molded plastic is specially used widely in the medical segment as they can be sterilized hundreds of times without degradation.

Whatever you are of application, order for your plastic machining needs only with an experienced and well known vendor. This is to ensure quality as well as get value for your every penny spent.
