Be cognizant of routine activities that trigger the desire to have a smoke. For some, it is the first cup of coffee in the morning. For others it may be the end of a meal, or socializing with smoking friends. Whatever your trigger may be, this is the time you must remind yourself that you are quitting because you care enough about yourself that you want to.

Clean your house. This will give you an opportunity to stay busy. Additionally, you will be able to see the buildup of nicotine and tar on your walls and furnishings. This should discourage you from wanting to start again and purge the trace smells and sights associated with cigarette smoking.

Drink plenty of water when you are quitting cigarettes. The water will help flush the excess toxins from your system. As your body is detoxifying, you need to give the toxins a way out of your body. Keep a bottle of water with you when you are on the go and sip throughout the day.

To make quitting seem more possible, put it into perspective with the other things you’ve achieved in life. Bolster your confidence in yourself by focusing on previous successes, whether those are in your professional or personal life. For example, tell yourself that if you can get a degree/raise a child/buy a house, then certainly you can quit smoking.

To avoid unnecessary discouragement, tell everyone in your life that you are quitting smoking. This will prepare those closest to you for the mood swings that often accompany nicotine withdrawal. This will also alert other smokers that you do not want or need the temptation of them offering you a cigarette.

You may want to think about getting acupuncture done to quit smoking. This method involves the acupuncturist using small needles and inserting them into the pressure points in your body that control your urge to smoke. Some acupuncturists even accept insurance, as long as quitting will help a pre-existing medical condition.

Avoid people that irritate you. Every smoker has at least one person in their immediate social circle of family, friends and coworkers that openly criticizes their smoking. This person will only cause you to light up when you try and quit. You don’t need their judgmental attitude, because you can only quit for you.

Get a professional teeth cleaning. You might just wind up loving your new smile so much that you decide to quit smoking so that you can keep your pearly whites pearly as they are then. In doing this, you are actually gaining beauty and tobacco freedom, which makes the grieving process a worthwhile exchange.

Think specifically about how quitting smoking will improve your life. Think of all the health conditions you can worry less about. Think about how much money you can save. Think about how the whiteness of your teeth and the smell of your home will improve. Most importantly, think of how much less likely your children will be to smoke.

Stock your refrigerator with fruit juice before quitting. Nicotine releases sugar into your bloodstream, so when you quit you may have massive sugar cravings for a few days. Drinking juice is a healthy way to relieve these cravings. However, if you’re diabetic this solution can be dangerous for you, so you should talk to your doctor about safe ways for you to manage sugar cravings.

Get rid of all of your cigarette smoking paraphernalia. You do not need ashtrays or lighters if you are not smoking. If you frequently have guests who smoke, save one ashtray and put it outside for them to use. Clearing these items from your home will help reinforce your choice.

Replace your smoking habit with something else to occupy yourself and keep you distracted. Many people find that chewing gum, sucking on a hard candy or eating carrot sticks can help them. There are sugar free gums and candies available so that you won’t trade smoking for weight gain. Find a healthy substitute and keep it on hand at all times, for when those cravings strike.

If you experience cravings, remember that the strength of the craving should subside within three to five minutes. Any crave episode triggered by habits (for example, an after-dinner cigarette craving) should subside as long as you distract yourself. Conscious triggers like acute stress may need extra work to overcome.

It should be easy to see by now that quitting smoking is within your reach. You simply need the determination to make it through the more uncomfortable stages of detoxification, and victory can be yours. Remember that there are many benefits to quitting, so begin your efforts today by applying these tips.
