Is falling asleep or remaining asleep all night long difficult for you? Don’t let this upset you. Many others share your discomfort. Lots of people have trouble sleeping at some point in their lives. Don’t feel that you have to just accept this situation. If you’re frequently sleep deprived, you shouldn’t start to look at this situation as normal. You have quite a few options when it comes to combating insomnia and being able to once again enjoy a full night’s rest. We’ll now take a look at some of these useful techniques.

The first tip, which should go without saying, is to lay off eating or drinking anything stimulating as the evening approaches. This includes products with caffeine and tobacco products as well. Coffee, of course, has got to be the number one ‘eye opener’ that people reach for in the morning. But, at night, when it’s time to get some shuteye, that’s the last thing you want to drink. You can set a goal to stop consuming anything that is stimulating after a certain hour each day. This practice has been a big help to a lot of people. They simply drink non-caffeine beverages and a water. If you set your ‘cut off’ time 4-5 hours before bedtime, the stimulants will have leeched out of your system and won’t be available to disturb your sleep. While eating a large meal before bed may contribute to insomnia, a small, strategically planned snack can actually help you get to sleep. Certain foods are known to make you drowsy, which isn’t good during the day, but perfect before bed. Nuts -preferably unsalted, as you don’t want to get thirsty- warm milk and turkey are all effective in this way. Before going to bed, you may want to make yourself a turkey sandwich -though a small one, and without any spicy toppings or condiments, which will give your body the sleep-inducing substance tryptophan; you can wash it down with a small glass of warm milk. Aside from the large portions, people tend to get tired after holiday meals because of the turkey they’ve eaten. Check out Foot Reflexology Chart simplified for well-rounded ideas.

Don’t be tempted by over-the-counter products to help you sleep. If you feel you have to get some kind of medication to get relief from your insomnia, it’s time to see a doctor. Many of the sleep aids you see advertised on TV and sold at the pharmacy are potent enough to make you dependent on them. Your body will start to rely on this medication to sleep, which means if you try to stop, your insomnia will be even worse than before. Don’t think that just because you don’t need a prescription for a drug that it’s safe or not habit forming. It is better to try folk and home remedies if you want a good night’s sleep than it is to use something like one of the over the counter PM drugs. There are an awful lot of things you can do to ensure that you get a good night’s sleep. Very often, it only takes adjusting something in your life, or perhaps adding a helpful habit or getting rid of a bad one. Any remedy or practice that has a calming effect on your body and nervous system is going to be helpful for promoting sleep. There are times, however, when you can’t rely on natural and self help cures for insomnia and you need a doctor’s help. Whatever you do, don’t give up!
