A question about personalized Christmas Cards?
Last year I sent out Christmas cards and included a picture of my immediate family, my husband, my son, and me. I sent out cards to everyone in my address book including extended family. When the Christmas card from my in-laws arrived I was kind of thrown. It was one of those print off cards from Walgreen’s with a couple pictures, one of the pictures was the same picture that I had sent out. I had no idea that she (my mother-in-law) was going to include us in her Christmas card. I didn’t say anything to her or my husband, I let it go. But now that that time of year is coming around, I am curious; what is the proper etiquette for this situation? Should she have asked to include us in her card? And, just throwing this out there, is it unreasonable of me to say no? Or, because it is her son, should I just be ok with her including him plus us in her annual send-outs?

What your mother-in-law did was certainly odd. The rule of thumb everyone I know has always observed is once your kids are married with a family of their own you don’t include them in your Christmas Card anymore. But then again, I have recieved pictures of Grandchildren in my cards. Maybe that is all she was doing. In any case, I wouldn’t make a big deal out of it. Just let it go. It is annoying, it is odd, but confronting her may not be worth the bad feelings it will cause. You could always have a special picture taken just for your christmas cards and give her her first copy in her card along with everyone else. Or don’t give her one at all.
This isn’t exactly proper etiquette, but look at it this way: She must be proud of her son’s family to include you in her Christmas cards! I would ask your husband if he knows why she did this, he knows her better than you do. Other than that, be flattered that she considers you immediate family and wants to show you off. Just let it go, it isn’t worth hurting her feelings when there was no mal-intent.
