In the game of basketball, the most essential part is the ability to shoot baskets.
This is how your team scores points, so every player should focus on this skill. Shooting has many aspects and there are many different types of shots. When learning the game, it’s a good idea to be a well-rounded player so work on shooting from every position. Keep reading to learn tips for improving your skills with this all important part of basketball.
In basketball, one of the key shots is the layup. This is one of the first things players are taught when they first start playing basketball. While some call it the easiest shot, that isn’t necessarily true. A good layup requires perfect timing, as well as an ability to outmaneuver the players who are trying to block you. When performing a layup, use the foot opposite from the side of the hoop that you’re approaching to push off. So if you’re doing a layup from the right side of the hoop, push off with your left foot. When you do this, you have the best balance and momentum to make your shot. Focus on the square above the hoop and not on the ball when shooting.
Whenever you’re on the court, you should know whether or not you’re within shooting range, which is something that differs from one player to the next. In order to improve your range, you may need to get stronger, and/or change your form, but that’s something to work on in practice, not during a real game. This means the distance from the rim that you have a good chance of making the shot. Naturally, if time is running out and you have to take a shot, you’ll take it no matter where you are, but ordinarily you should stick to shooting from the range that’s natural for you. Some players like the thrill of making exceptional shots, but what you should really be aiming for is improving your natural (within range) shooting skills.
Because jump shots are an important part of shooting, you should also work to improve your vertical jump, as well. You will notice you have greater control and better aim if you keep your elbow in and under the ball as much as possible. The longer the shot needs to be, the higher you will need to jump. But make sure that you’re not focusing on jumping so much that you lose control of your hand and the ball.
It all has to be done in one fluid motion. Release the ball as you reach the peak of your jump. It will take practice to perfect your jumping and your jump shots.
Becoming a great basketball shooter can’t be done with one single step. You will need to practice and work hard to improve. You also have to identify the areas where you need the most work and focus on these. Use the above tips and you will start to see progress in your shooting skills.
