Concealed under the guise of a semi-anonymous Twitter account and a blog entitled “UGA Street Style,” Dana Balch, a sophomore public relations major from Alpharetta, and roommate Lucy Woodhead, a senior Christian Louboutin Wedding Shoes merchandising major from Cumming, are spanning campus in order to photograph students whose style can be distinguished in the midst of a seemingly indistinguishable campus. “There is such a large spectrum of fashions we like and that we see every single day, and honestly, I’m shocked there aren’t more blogs and Twitters like ours showing off these unique Athens fashions,” Balch said. “A few people have tried, but I know we can make this thing better and even bigger.” “UGA Street Style,” which was created less than a month ago, features students and local residents in their streetwear.

Cryptic tweets such as “Spending some time at Starbucks Downtown” and “Getting some work done outside Lamar Dodd” followed by hashtag #seeyouthere encourages followers to see if they can identify who is behind the blog — and possibly even be featured themselves. “The mysteriousness is what makes the street style Twitter persona. Our identities aren’t necessarily hidden, but enough to keep people guessing,” Balch said. “All it takes is someone reading our tweets and spotting me with my camera, and they could figure it out. But I think it still shakes things up a bit and makes things more fun.” According to Woodhead, their best fashion photographs correspond with certain areas of campus. “I get a disproportional amount of my shots in front of the Lamar Dodd School of Art. But that’s always pretty much expected,” Woodhead said. “It’s strange how someone can walk through campus and literally see a transformation in the styles.” Some areas of campus produce a number of style varieties, while other areas are more difficult to photograph, the students said. “I can rarely ever find someone to photograph on the south part of campus,” Balch said. “UGA Street Style” now features a “Style Star of the Week.” A select student is photographed every day of the week, modeling their day-to-day clothing. Joanna Sullivan, a “Style Star of the Week” and a junior magazines major from Woodstock, dressing apart from the masses is something that is more enjoyable than burdensome. “Taking time to build and create an outfit more so gets me excited and sets the tone for my day. In choosing what I wear, I essentially get to play a different character every day,” Sullivan said. “It’s exciting to be a part of something that I believe is going to be huge on campus.” Praise is the common thread in “UGA Street Style.” According to Balch and Woodhead, there is no such thing as a “Fashion Don’t.” The blog features styles ranging from maxi dresses to high-waisted shorts to witch-inspired shoes. “If someone is wearing an outfit that they made, I think it has merit,” Balch said. “Everybody has their tastes, so who gets to decide what’s in and what’s not?”
