Mat Mindset: Stronghold or Weak Hyperlink inside your BJJ Game?

May 13, 2012 by TerryVlaicu

Throughout the conversation, the student (who we’ll call Grappler X) stated how he believed all that “mindset stuff for surviving difficult mat situations was a bunch of crap that old guys needed.” And regardless of how much I tried to “convince” him that it was real for everybody (regardless of age), he wasn’t purchasing it.

Then one day, Grappler X waited to talk with me following class simply because he wanted to share some thing with me that he “discovered” a few days earlier.

Grappler X stated that throughout a match with a difficult training
partner that usually kicked his butt on the mat easily, he decided this outcome would be different.

Grappler X produced up in his mind that he was NOT going to beaten to a pulp or be finished by his partner on that day. And to Grappler X’s total amazement, his partner Did not finish him during their match!

Now, If you could’ve noticed the look on Grappler X’s face whilst he was telling me the story, you could tell that he was caught between being happy and shocked in the outcome, particularly because he went via such fantastic work to tell me how mindset coaching was crap just
days ago.

He had found the “weak link” in his grappling game.

What he learned that day was it can be that easy to deal with a difficult opponent when the body does Precisely what your thoughts tells it to do. In case your mind says fight, your body will fight! And in case your thoughts says quit, your body will quit!”

And now that he was open to becoming taught some “OG Wisdom”, I told him to believe back to past matches where he was being thrashed to determine just how much his “weak link” was present. I knew the answer could be yes, but he had to realize that reality for himself so that he could see how it was working against him, whether or not he knew it or not.

What about you? Are you currently taking numerous “mat thrashings” regularly simply because your mind is telling the body to “give up and quit” throughout matches? If that’s the case, get rid of that weak link in your mental mindset and watch your efficiency go to the next level.
