As the popularity with online higher education continues to grow, a younger group of students has noticed the capability of online learning. Online courses is a realistic option for young students with medical and behavior issues who cannot flourish in a traditional high higher education.

One such student, Chelsea Ballenger, 18, from Tacoma, Washington, might not have earned her high school diploma with no option of online higher education. Ballenger was not able to have success at a traditional high school, or even an alternative school. She enrolled in her group college’s Fresh Start process, a scholarship program that will help students earn their high school diploma in a different setting and working toward college credits. But Ballenger, who “wanted to have a different relationship with school, ” found the correct fit through another option- online learning.

Tacoma Virtual Studying, an online education program for high school students, launched this fall as a result of Tacoma Public Schools. The program is well-known among students who struggle in the traditional high school setting and those who have problems with time management due to family or job-related factors. Ballenger works full-time for a department store and claimed that “studying online, on her own time, allows her to focus better than in a traditional high school classroom. ” About 100 students have previously enrolled in Tacoma Digital Learning.

Nearly 500 students withdrew from Tacoma high schools not too long ago to pursue an online learning program through another district because Tacoma didn’t offer one. Michael Farmer, online learning coordinator, said that this number is related to an entire “middle school’s value of full-time equivalent scholars. ” And, “when students leave their residence district to attend higher education in another district, their state funding- an estimated $6, 600 per student- goes with them, ” which can produce a severe problem for school districts.

Tacoma Virtual Learning was created about 15 years after the first online education program launched inside state of Washington. All online courses are absolve to students who are enrolled full-time status within a public school. While convenience is usually the main factor which attracts students to internet learning, a variety of solutions among programs is key as well. Students can transfer from one district to another to identify a program they like, and can choose to enroll full-time online, or to take only component of their required courses online while completing the others in a ground school.
