Although we do know that acupuncture has been around a very long time, it is vague when it originated, but some people do believe this philosophy has been around five thousand years or longer. There are those who believe it even goes back into the prehistoric eras based on the belief that it was found when a warrior claimed to be healed of a certain condition when being wounded by a sharp object. There have been ancient stones found in China that supports this belief.

Missionaries from the west discovered needling while traveling through Asia throughout the sixteenth century, it spread throughout Europe when a Dutch physician wrote about this treatment. It was not fully accepted in Europe however and was not practiced widely there. Even in China around this time, the unlearned and lower classes widely accepted acupuncture as opposed to the scholars who thought it ungentlemely to practice this method.

Acupuncture is from Traditional Chinese Medicine point of view. This POV differs entirely from western medicine. There are five basic elements that represent states of being, metal, fire, wood, water and earth. A foundational concept of traditional Chinese medicine is the polarity between yin and yang. Together these two forces make up the universe. The entire universe is made up of yin and yang. As the yin is passive, dark and receptive the yang is light, active and projective.

Acupuncture became very popular in the United States when President Nixon during the 1970′s visited China and observed acupuncture in practise. It then became pretty popular here and has since been accepted as a legitimate medical treatment. There are many uses for acupuncture or needling as it is sometimes referred to as. From cancer treatment patients recovering from nausea, to those who have just had surgery, it is a very helpful and useful treatment.

Energy lines are thought to run down and around our bodies in the traditional Chinese medicine view known as meridians, channels and acupuncture points. The point are several channels merging together or where energy may gather. Trained acupuncturists need to learn about these points in order to become an effective practitioner. They will learn the location of each point and how to treat them.
