Stop Sleeping Around: May is Better Sleep Month

Recently, in a speech given to a group of powerful, business minded women, Arianna Huffington (the co-founder and chief editor of the Huffington Post) mentioned that she, along with this group of women are going to “literally sleep [their] way to the top.”

In another related topic, there is a slogan afloat that most of you will hear throughout the month of May. The encouraging message is to “Stop Sleeping Around”.

Both of these phrases immediately take most of our minds to the gutter. And not unlike the majority of commercials that you see on TV, these sleazy sayings are not talking about sex like you would first think. We all know, shamefully, that sex sells. So what is “sleeping our way to the top” and “stop sleeping around” trying to sell us? They are literally trying to sell us on getting more sleep!

Arianna Huffington, right before she mentioned her new quest to reach the top, said, “I studied, I met with medical doctors, scientists, and I’m here to tell you that the way to a more productive, more inspired, more joyful life is: getting enough sleep.”

She relates with all of these women who she calls “Type ‘A’ Women” by admitting the fact that they all work too hard and usually sacrifice sleep. She tells a story of when she passed out from exhaustion at work and hit her face on her desk, breaking her cheekbone and gashing her eye (a five-stitch gash). She has since changed her ways and is an advocate of sleep, and an enemy of the “one-up on sleep deprivation”. It is not cool to not sleep.

So what about the other message to “Stop Sleeping Around”? Each May, The Better Sleep Council designates the month as The Better Sleep Month. This Year’s theme is “Stop Sleeping Around.”

This phrase, like the joke that Ms. Huffington makes, is not about sex. The push from the Better Sleep Council to “stop sleeping around” is a push to help people get the right amount of sleep in the right place: our own beds.

The mission statement for the Better Sleep Council declares that it “is devoted to educating the public about the importance of sleep to good health and quality of life, and about the value of the sleep system and sleep environment in the pursuit of a good night’s sleep.”

What better way to fulfill that mission than to dedicate a whole month to sleeping more?

One of the reasons behind the decision to hold the better sleep month during May is because of the shift to longer days. People tend to sleep less during the summer months, and the better sleep month of May is a reminder to keep a good sleeping schedule to kick off the summer.

There are many health advantages to sleeping more. Hormones are aligned properly (especially the hormones that control eating) so sleeping better is a great way to lose some unwelcome weight. Sleeping more also allows us to function better throughout the day, especially with our mental energy. The more rested we are, the better we are at finding solutions to problems and sharper thinking overall.

Remember that in order to get the sleep that you need, you must be comfortable in your bed. Having the right mattress is crucial. If you have not been sleeping well then one of your problems (because it could be many) is not having the best mattress for you. If you think that you might be due for a new mattress then you should check out our website. We have a 7 point checklist for what you should know before you start shopping.

Hopefully you can use the Better Sleep Month to motivate you to get the sleep that you desperately need. Be encouraged to use Ms. Huffington’s advice “to shut your eyes… shut your engines, and discover the power of sleep”.
