The Burlesque Shoe Is Hitting Its Stride
Patrons of the arts gather in beautiful theaters to lose themselves in live performances that are meant to tug at the heartstrings. That’s all very nice, but there is another form of live art that is much more exciting, and which has titillated its patrons since the late 17th century. That would be burlesque, and it is the perfect combination of comedy, theatre, and teasing, which may help explain why it is alive and well to this day.
Burlesque performances traditionally poked fun at the events of the day, and people lined up for the comedy as much as they did for the beautiful women on display, all of whom would perform a little striptease during the act. Oftentimes the only things that were covering up the female naked form were fans, feathers, tassels, and a pair of shoes. The shoes themselves spawned a whole new fashion, and it’s one that is making something of a huge comeback today.
Burlesque shoes were commonly large-heeled, brightly patterned affairs that were a large part of the color and pageantry of the live shows. While it may not have been politically correct for a lady in the earliest days of burlesque to sport those shoes anywhere other than on the stage, the tide has turned considerably in recent years, and burlesque shows are now very much in demand among modern women who are going after a certain look.
It’s no real surprise that the burlesque fashions are so popular with women who adopt a retro, pin-up style look to their everyday appearance. It’s not uncommon to see ladies who look as though they have just been peeled off of the side of a World War II aircraft and dropped in the street, although the one major difference would be the tattoos that modern ladies sport. The rise in popularity of the ink trade was what arguably gave rise to the new brand of pin-up girl, and that has also translated to the neo-burlesque shows that are popping up in major cities across the world.
There is something very much alive about that style, which perhaps has a lot to do with bright colors that it tends to evoke. Burlesque shoes with their bright animal prints or rhinestones and high-heeled drama are the perfect addition to that overall style. I think it’s also fair to say that men are in agreement that it’s a style that should stay as it is a glamorous look that is both sexy and stylish. There is something just perfectly beautiful about a woman in burlesque style heels, fishnet stockings, and colorful dresses that accentuate any figure. Even if you have never been to a live burlesque show, or know nothing about its history, there is no denying that the styles that the art form turned out are ones that are absolutely timeless.
